Children on risk assessment: guidelines on informing and designing programmes from a child safeguarding approach
A Talk by Juan Diego Oquendo (Child Safeguarding Adviser, Keeping Children Safe)
About this Talk
A key component of mitigating risks for children is creating safe spaces for them in programs and interventions. These safe spaces are usually conceived by adults: we might consider the best locations and identify hazardous elements, but from a child's point of view the risks of harm might come from things that we as adults would never imagine. The concept of child safeguarding is not only about how adults have contact and impact on children; it is also about the relationships children build, the role models they see, how they access services, and become their own decision makers.
In this talk we will discuss how to engage children on risk assessment through strategies and exercises, and how to incorporate lessons learned in programs during the design and implementation stages.
